Carry your camera around with you constantly.
Not only does it give you a chance to know your camera inside and out, it gives you valuable shooting experience, and a chance for you to look at your own taping/ filmming styles, etc.
I do it, and must say that my friends might of thought I was a bit on the off side, but it has been worth it.
I make music videos, not movies, but my tip is you can never have too much gaffer tape and always shoot more than you think you will need. Things always turn out different in the studio than on location.
PLAN, PLAN PLAN!!! Plan every shooting day, and plan every shot. Doing this will save time, money, and your sanity.

My tip is when you are filming ask your actors wait for about 3 seconds before they begin their lines and wait 3 seconds before they move after you shout cut. Cause those few seconds will help ALOT in the editing.
If it ceases to be fun, pack up and go home.
